Defending the State through Faith, Unity, and Preparedness (A Study in the Light of the Prophetic Biography ﷺ)
Abstract
Faith, unity, and preparedness are fundamental values strongly emphasized by Islamic law, from which all branches of the religion derive guidance. Among the most significant of these branches is the defense of the state and its people, as the weakening of defense inevitably leads to the weakening of the state and the loss of security. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ established the foundations of defense upon these three principles, integrating spiritual strength with practical measures. His supplication during battle demonstrates that defense is not limited to material or technical means but also includes a strong faith-based dimension. Unity likewise constitutes a central pillar of defense, as reflected in the Prophet’s establishment of brotherhood between the Muhajirun and the Ansar and his rejection of divisive tribal slogans. Preparedness formed the third pillar, manifested through systematic organization, delegation of responsibilities, and military discipline in battles such as Badr and al-Ahzab. These examples collectively illustrate that the Islamic concept of state defense rests upon faith, unity, and continuous preparedness.
