Abstract

Allah Almighty sent the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as a model and exemplar for the whole humanity. His sayings contain comprehensive guidance for every human being until the Day of Judgment. Just as all the Prophets (peace be upon them) employed, alongside other means of communication, the art of oratory to convey their message to their respective peoples, likewise a vast corpus of Islamic teachings is found within the sermons of the Prophet ﷺ. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was commissioned to a people who were deeply immersed in numerous moral and social evils. Through various methods, he undertook their reform and moral training, among which preaching, counsel, and public oratory (sermons) held a prominent place. In Arab society, eloquence and oratory enjoyed an exceptional status; indeed, the Arabs were widely acknowledged for their rhetorical mastery. On this basis, they would refer to non-Arab peoples as Ajam (mute). Allah Almighty endowed the Prophet ﷺ with extraordinary eloquence in speech. In order to transform Arab society, he delivered sermons on diverse occasions, addressing a wide range of subjects, including beliefs, acts of worship, social dealings, societal relations, politics, and ethics. This paper, therefore, not only elucidates the meaning and significance of ethics, status of ethics in Islam but also examines the moral qualities articulated in the sermons of the Prophet ﷺ that remain essential and relevant in every age.
