Shaykh Shihāb Ul-Dīn Umar Suhrawardī’s Shayookh-e-Hadith: Introductory and Analytical Study
Abstract
Sufism as a tradition started from the very early age of Islam and is still alive movement in the society. The sufi doctors, not only imparted a social welfare teaching of Islam but also the self-purification in quite a psychological way. This path was paved through the knowledge which these Sufis possessed. All the heads of Sufi orders had a chrisma in terms of spiritual status and they were also as a man of letters. This owes to the persons from which they got knowledge and self-purification. As mentors are always the pavers of the road to move forward, the sufi masters spent not only a long time in the company of such people, but also got benefit from a large number of scholars. Similar is the case of Shaykh Shihāb al-Dīn ‘Umar al-Suhrawardī, the second great sufi of Suharwardī order. This article is focused to discuss his mentors and their contributions in the field of Hadith. His chain to transmit Prophetic traditions through these personalities has also been traced and his teachers in the field of hadith have been introduced.
