The Legal Profession (Advocacy): A Shariah Research Review
Abstract
Advocate is one who defends or maintains a cause or proposal, or one who supports or promotes the interests of a cause or group, or one who pleads the cause of another specifically one who pleads the cause of another before a Tribunal or judicial court. Advocacy (Wakalat) is a very noble profession; and those who link with this profession are also very noble persons (advocates). It helps victim against offender, oppressed against oppressor, and weak against stronger, therefore due to its service, it also provides equal and full opportunity to poor and rich to put his/her case before honorable judges without any fear and undue influence. Lawyers at all times maintain the honour and dignity of their profession as essential agents of the administration of justice. Lawyers, in protecting the rights of their clients and in promoting the cause of justice, seek to uphold human rights and fundamental freedoms recognized by national and international law and at all times act freely and diligently in accordance with the law and recognized standards and ethics of the legal profession. But The conduct of lawyers in the present era is totally against the traditions and high values of the profession and they are showing cynicism. Today, the common man is forced to ask why lawyers are no longer civilized and polite.
